My husband and kids decided that it would be “fun” to camp out in Hartville, Wyoming (population: 62) to watch the solar eclipse on Aug. 21. For me, camping means opening the window at the motel.

When I found out that our campsite wouldn’t have electricity, cell phone service or bathrooms, I was … well, you can imagine.

Boy, was I wrong! Viewing the eclipse in the path of totality at the top of a mountain with two other families in this remote spot in Wyoming was an experience I will never forget.

For about 90 minutes the shadow of the moon raced over mountains at twice the speed of sound, and we had an absolute direct view. We saw the whole thing unfold minute by minute before our eyes (with glasses on of course)! The whole mountain started changing colors until it was dark. The sun was covered by the black moon, but there was a shining “diamond ring” around it, casting a beautiful sunset no matter where you looked. It was eerie, beautiful, mystical and magical. It was one of the most awe-inspiring sights I will ever see.

As summer draws to a close and the hard realities of work loom ahead, remember that like the eclipse, you’re part sun and moon. You’re part earth and sea, wind and fire, with some salt and dust thrown in for good measure. We can do this!

To the cosmos!!
