An Inside Look at Retail Executive Salaries

By: Melissa Campanelli

In this issue of the Inner Circle, we debut the first of what will be a series of articles on proprietary salary data collected by our sister publication, Total Retail. The first annual Salary Benchmark Report features salary data from Total Retail’s audience of retail executives from retail organizations of all sizes and product verticals. The data was analyzed based upon a number of variables, including gender, age, experience, title, education level, company size (measured by annual revenue), retail vertical and geographic region.

There were number of interesting findings to emerge from the data (660 total responses were collected), but perhaps most germane to this audience is the salary comparison data between male and female respondents. The article below details how salary levels differ by gender. The positive news to report is that while not entirely equal, the female respondents to the survey are being paid competitively to their male counterparts. There’s certainly still work to be done, but retail organizations are further along in eliminating the gender wage gap than many other verticals.

Total Retail’s Salary Benchmark Report was produced under the direction of Nathan Safran, director of research at NAPCO Media, parent company of Total Retail and the Women in Retail Leadership Circle.

“I’m thrilled to have participated in the Total Retail salary research,” commented Safran, a former Forrester Research analyst. “The industry salary data will prove to be invaluable to retailers, HR managers and executives in the industry.”

In addition to data collected on salaries, the report also examined retail executives’ benefits packages (financial and non-financial), career growth opportunities at the current companies, and views on how fairly they’re being compensated. In subsequent issues of Inner Circle, we’ll bring to you that data broken down by gender. Part one today is focused on salary.

In addition to introducing the Salary Benchmark Report, which you can download for free here, this issue features content on building your personal brand, finding the optimal work/life balance, and developing the right employee experience at your organization.

Enjoy!
